Breath

A transdisciplinary multi-media performance

The first version of Breath was realized amid the COVID-19 pandemic and premiered at the European Forum Alpbach in August 2021. The work explored the human condition through the lens of breath. It showed how ecological, biological, and social systems we have created increasingly constrain what we all depend on: the ability to breathe. It also explores what kind of cooperation would be necessary to reverse direction.

The piece was then further developed by exploring the evolutionary origins of breathing and comparing ancient civilizations’ understanding of breathing to scientific knowledge of breathing. Biological, ecological, philosophical, social, and behavioral aspects were woven into a story that shows through the lens of breath where we came from, where we are now, and where we could go. Breath was recently performed in Paris at the Institut Pasteur (August 2022) and Insitutue de France (June 2023) and the MuTh Concert Hall in Vienna (October 2023).
